Bomb MTC Experience

Hey Family!

This is kinda weird cause for the past year and a half id see letters like this from friends on their missions, but here I am! Its awesome here, I’m really enjoying it. I wrote a letter home so it may come Saturday or Monday. I have some pictures i was going to send to you, but alas, there is no SD card slot. Ive learned a lot – I feel like Ive been here for 2 weeks already, but its been 2 1/2 days. I feel like Ive always been somewhat good at understanding deep material, but here they basically are trying to get us to read something and come to the deep conclusion that they do, but its a process – we end up learning things that Ive never thought about before. Ive already seen Sam Opie (Choir/swing dancing with Jacob, etc.) Here, some elder Elders (Ha, see what i did there.) came into our room and told us some tips and also got up on the desks and pulled off our AC vents and outlets and showed us  “Narnia Holes” Where Missionaries stash treats they buy and leave them there for the next missionaries that know about it and such. We got mini doughnuts, butterfingers, and sunflower seeds haha We aren’t aloud to use the term “Guys” here, and its trippin everybody up! I try so hard to not say “guys” and find my self saying “ladies” or something. We all pound our heads when we forget. Me and my companion are pretty different, but as time goes on we find things to talk and laugh about. Tell dad my “micro fiber towel” is turning me blue after a shower and makes me basically take another one. I think its kinda funny, but paper towels aren’t really the ideal…ill figure it out :] So i have some exciting news in my letter! cant wait for you to get it. Today Elder Gibson and I at lunch saw where the sisters in our district (going to Fort Worth also) were sitting, then a couple seats away from them were other sisters we knew going to Fort Worth also (not in our district) and we sat in between them and it was a cool mission group! Plus on the other side of the other sisters were some more elders going to the same place too! Great group – looks like ill get along with all of them just fine :] Waking up at 6:30 was surprisingly easy, but during my classes my head was ready to crash. Overall everything is great here, i give my companion a hard time for enjoying the sun while its out – comparing him to the sisters huddled in the open light haha Also another funny thought: We were all in bed and Elder Hatch (in my district and room) was about to go to sleep and said, “ahh dang, I forgot i still have my magnet name tag still on!” and Elder G. said, “Hey, you can stick it to the metal bar of my bed [because it’s at eye level] so you can see it in the morning.” Elder Hatch: “Naww, i’m good, its creepy to see my name on your bed.” haha I had me laughing for a while. On that note, I hope to hear from y’all! I love the idea of letters because i can get them during the week, but emails fine too! Ill type next week, and ill write back before that if i get a letter :]

Love all y’all

Update (included in Nathan’s first snail mail)

UPDATE: I went to send this letter but found I didn’t put a stamp on it… 😛 <- as Jacob would do.

Today I saw a “Future Missionary” from the Gilbert Temple Cultural Celebration! And another Elder I knew from somewhere in Gilbert…

Today was great, we did a lot of simplifying our teaching (really hard sometimes) and basically explaining words like “sin,” “salvation,” and “repentance” in role-plays. We said like a zillion prayers today and sorta difficult finding different things to be thankful for and to ask for.

An Elder in our District is having a difficult time, (all in his head – he seems totally fine) so he had our district give him a blessing.

Today we met our Branch President (Laney) <- Ha. [That’s the same name as our current Stake President in Gilbert]

He knows everything! He’s held a calling in everything you can think of save an Apostle and such. Any time someone was talking about a doctrine, he blurted out 3 scriptures. I read from his scriptures and he basically has no more room to write in any margins.

So I’ve been called to be a ZONE LEADER! Which is sweet. 2nd day and everything.

Random note: I got a strait banana from the cafeteria and smuggled it home ’cause it was basically a work of art! So much to write, so little time, so therefore the last thing I write about is a Banana (that’s B . A . N . A … just kidding – not “Sunday” worthy.)

Signing off again for the last time!

Nathan’s first snail mail

Dear Mom and Dad,

Today has been a great experience! I’ve met some cool people today. Today I saw a girl sister that I knew from BYUI, but soon found she is her identical twin sister! Weird. I saw another sister from Chorale.

Today we had a role play with a lady – I don’t know if she was an actor or actually non-LDS. She talked about her life and the room full of missionaries were able to raise their hands and basically take turns being in the role play from their seats. She talked about her son that died and was really emotional, so it seemed real. An Elder raised his had and told her that these struggles are there to make us stronger, but then she said, “What about a bird with a broken wing?” Another Elder answered her and said, “Make Dinner.” She stood up and the instructor got tensed and said, “Ok, ok, next question!” waving his arms. She then cried, pointed at that Elder, and told him he owed her an apology and went bawling out of the room. The instructor told the room to hurry and vacate, “Everybody, out!” I happened all so fast… we stood out in the hall confused. The lady was hurt by the analogy in connection with her deceased son. An Elder then lead us in song in the hall while we waited for instruction.

On a different note, my companion is Elder Gibson of Beaverton, OR. He’s a pretty cool Brother. I’ve met other missionaries going to Fort Worth and know I’ll get along with them… Although they are Sisters and not future companions.

We get to find out DL’s and ZL’s tomorrow. Currently we are the only District in our Zone.

Well it’s 5 till lights out, I’ll talk soon!

Love Y’all (and All Y’all)

Yeehaw!

What are the odds

Update from my Mom on Facebook the day I left:

Coolest thing… When we dropped my son off at the airport this morning we met another missionary flying out with the same last name, traveling on the same plane. Householder is not common… We’ve never met another one outside of our immediate family before. We always get the question, “are you related to Delbert from Thatcher?” And the answer is always, “we keep hearing about him, but we’ve never met him.” The common ancestor is clear back to the 1730s when two brothers came over from Europe. We are from one line, Delbert is from the other line. I imagine it was probably a joyful day in heaven with the brothers watching their descendants finally meet, and especially as they boarded the same plane for the MTC to serve The Lord for 2 years. My son is ultimately headed for Texas Fort Worth mission, the other young man is headed for the Italy Milan mission.
